Poincaré series and stratifications

A surprising result from the 80ies is that Poincaré series are rational. This can be considered as a (strange) statement about isometry types of definable sets in valued fields. I will explain this, and I will present a result (about the existence of certain stratifications) which completely classifies these isometry types and thereby giving a geometric explanation of the rationality of the Poincaré series.
